The months seemed to drag on. And on. And on. Kelley thought she was burst. Not from excitement so much as her ever growing baby bump. This business of growing a baby wasn’t easy! She was easily tired and wiped out and her lower back hurt. On the plus side, her hair was never shinier or healthier and her face DID glow with the vibrant health that only expectant mothers are fortunate enough to be blessed with. But in spite of that, she wanted this to be over. Most of all – she just wanted to meet her baby and to find out if it was a boy or a girl!
Luckily, Bronson was the most considerate husband ever to grace historical pages of any book. Really, to write about him makes ME sick to my stomach. It’s all so romantic and yes, there were some who suffered from jealousy. Or envy. But they were happy for Kelley. After her terrible childhood it was her time to shine! Anyway, the point is, Bronson waited on her hand and foot and would have gone so far as to endure the pregnancy for her, if only he were able.
As the final few weeks set in, Kelley suddenly found an energy that seemed limitless and never-ending. She tore around the house, cleaning and doing last minute changes to the nursery and spent more than a few long days in her Soap Lab, formulating different gentle products for newborn baby skin. One day as she whipped up a batch of lotion, she had a thought. Grismelda.
(Grismelda? What?? I know – I was shocked to get to this point as well. Why she would spend even one second thinking about that monster… I know I wouldn’t have! But perhaps that is why I am the one recounting the history and not the person the history is about…)
She finished the lotion and then roamed the house looking for Bronson. After finding him, they sat together for a few moments while Kelley thought about her step-mother and the fact that perhaps she needed a second chance. With Samuel (Kelley’s father) vanishing, Grismelda was alone and maybe, just maybe, this baby would soften her and help her to become a more kind and caring person. Aren’t grandmothers kindly souls who bake cookies and coddle little children? Bronson wasn’t too keen on this idea but never one to deny his bride anything, he agreed and after packing a few small bags, he grasped Kelley’s hand and they poofed! away to find out.
Unfortunately, Kelley’s pregnancy made her just a wee bit optimistic. Ok, more like HUGELY optimistic. Here is something to ponder while you wait for the next chapter… just WHERE did Samuel go? HOW did he get there? And WHO could be responsible? Hmmm?
