Lotions and salves! It didn’t take Kelley long to realize that she was sitting on a virtual gold mine. The women of the town clamored for her soap and certainly they would be all over lotions and salves. Dry, chapped hands resulted from a variety of chores and hard work the women did, including washing clothing in very lye heavy soapy water. A salve with the healing properties of comfrey, chamomile, and a few drops of the Fairy Elixir would be like a miracle to the simple townsfolk and Kelley was determined to provide this and so much more.
Under the careful tutelage of Theodora, Kelley spent several days learning the finer arts of making healing salves and soothing lotion. Once Theodora was convinced that Kelley knew what she was doing, they made several large batches of honey lavender lotion and comfrey chamomile salve and offered them in the shop. The women went wild – their hands had never been so soft and supple. Using the salve for just a few days cleared up even the worst of the cracks and chapping and the lotion became a nightly ritual that for the first time in their hard lives, was something they could look forward to each day.
As the days went, Kelley felt a tingling of excitement that ran from the tips of her toes to the top of her head. The tiny seed of an idea took root and as she worked alongside Theodora, it finally grew too big to keep to herself. With a great burst of excitement, she shut the shop door one evening and then eagerly grabbed at Theodora. “LISTEN!” she thought.
Theodora listened intently as Kelley excitedly gave voice (well, her “thought” voice, that is) to her grand plan and before long, she too was tingling with excitement. “What a GREAT idea, Princess!” The two girls planned late into the night and then prepared to put The Plan into action the next day…
