When we left her last time, Kelley was on her way to the town of Freedom to open her handmade soap & supplies shop – Soapies! As she happily skipped her way along, her mind was flitting from one grandiose plan to another. Her own shop! On her own! Freedom… in Freedom! A new life lay before her – one filled with doing what SHE wanted.
And then her skipping slowed as a terrible thought wormed its way into her happy plans. She couldn’t speak. Not one word. And while she could write, the odds of finding a townsperson that could read what she wrote were pretty slim. Reading and writing were reserved for the upper class and royalty. Not those who worked and lived in the small towns that dotted the country. Without speech how could she find a building to house Soapies? There was no way to communicate with anyone. DRAT!
With that thought, she stopped dead in the road. Her fantasy seemed doomed to failure before it had even started. She stood stock still in growing dismay and anger and then levitated a good 2 feet straight up when a small voice piped up next to her – “Princess Kelley? I can help with your problem.”
Slowly settling back to solid ground, heart pounding, Kelley turned to see a tiny, reed thin girl with blonde hair that kissed the ground. She was dressed in a tunic that seemed to be made entirely of flowers and ivy. Kelley blinked a few times – she was almost positive she saw wings on the girl’s back. After several long stares she shook her head and thought that she was finally going crazy after everything that had happened to her in the recent past.
“How on earth is this tiny girl going to be able to help me with my inability to communicate with the townsfolk?” Kelley wondered. “Can she even read. Or write?”
“I can both read and write, Princess Kelley,” the girl chirped. “However, that will not be necessary for communication between the two of us. You simply need to think what you’d like me to communicate and I will speak to the townspeople on your behalf.”
“WHAT THE HECK?” Kelley knew that this time she was truly losing her mind. It was like this girl was actually READING her…
“Yes, Princess. I am!”
“Uh, wha, who – who are you? Where did you come from? How do you know who I am? How do you know WHAT I am? What..”
The girl began to giggle and taking Kelley’s hand, led her from the road and into a small clearing where she sat down on a fallen log and indicated that Kelley should sit down next to her.
With a vacant stare, Kelley sat heavily. This was simply too much. Reading her silent thoughts? Amazing and so incredibly hard to believe…
With a smile, the girl began to speak. “My name is Theodora. I was sent by Bronson to assist you in any way possible. He told me I would find you on your way to Freedom and here I am, ready to serve you.”
Kelley smiled at this – Bronson. He really was beginning to grow on her! In her greatest time of need, when all hope seemed lost – there he was. Or as was the case here, he had sent help in the form of a truly adorable girl. Kelley reached out and gave Theodora’s hand a quick squeeze. “Continue, please!” she thought.
Theodora smiled back. Her entire body almost seemed to glow as she did. “Princess, I am so excited to finally meet you! Bronson has spoke often of you and your rapid growth in Becoming. It is truly a honor to sit beside you now. And to serve you – a Wood Fairy has no greater honor. I am your handmaiden from this time forward until such time that you no longer have need of me and dismiss me. My entire life has been leading to this point. It’s what I’ve trained for and…”
“Wait – you’re a a huh… fairy?!” thought Kelley in utter disbelief. Then she lept up from the log and began to dance in glee. “There is a fairy sitting next to me? I knew I saw wings! A fairy. A fairy!!”
Beside her Theodora giggled and with a wink, unfurled the wings that were tucked on her back and fluttered them quickly for a few seconds.
Then both girls clasped hands and twirled and danced until they fell to the ground out of breath and weak from laughter.
Over the course of the next few hours, Kelley and Theodora “talked” and eventually hatched the plan that would find Kelley operating Soapies with Theodora as her trusted shop assistant. They finally left the clearing and set off towards Freedom.
Kelley’s heart sang like never before. She had a friend. A true friend and companion – and best of all, she could actually “talk” to someone again. After her long months of silence, this was nothing short of miraculous and Kelley felt as though her heart might burst from joy.
Next week – Kelley and Theodora reach Freedom. And work to open Soapies soap making supply shop…
