With her Handbook and secure in the knowledge that one day the Power that comes from being a True Princess would be hers for the taking, Kelley made a valiant attempt to live life as normally as possible. At least as possible as one can do when they are no longer able to speak.
Since Grismelda was never taught to read, Kelley was unable to communicate directly with her and was forced to use her father if she needed to “tell” her mother anything. This did not stop Grismelda from transforming from a simply nasty step-monster, erm, mother, into a perfectly horrid witch. Sometimes it takes the misfortune of others to show the true character of another. And Grismelda was no exception to this rule. With an awful amount of ugly glee she took to attempting to make Kelley’s life one of of utter misery.
Unfortunately for Grismelda though, Kelley was changing. Just the tiniest smidgen each day… not really apparent to anyone, but changing nonetheless. So Grismelda’s well-planned and executed daily abuse and torture had little to no affect on the Princess Becoming. Kelley simply dug in to an inner strength she had been unaware of possessing and made it through each day a bit better than the day before.
After several weeks, if you looked closely, Kelley almost appeared to be glowing. On several occasions, in the midst of screaming insults and ugliness at her, Grismelda would think that for some reason, the sun must be brighter. Totally unaware the changes that were taking place right in front of her face.
2 months into her Becoming, Grismelda was being especially grim and mouthy and Kelley angrily thought that if Grismelda had a headache, she would be unable to abuse her so. Immediately upon this thought, Grismelda ceased screaming and put a hand to her head stating that she did not feel well and was going to lie down.
Kelley stood in shock, her mind in a flutter. What just happened?! Taking advantage of this rare break Kelley fled the house, running across the fields to a nearby grove of trees and quiet stream. Arriving out of breath and with her mind racing, she collapsed to the ground and began to silently giggle. SHE had just given her step-mother a headache. By simply thinking it. AMAZING!
Giddy with excitement at the ability to secretly inflict pain upon her step-mother, Kelley lay back among the ferns and moss and sighed happily. A myriad of different options ran through her mind – each one a bit more nasty than the one before. Thankfully before she went too far down the mean girls thought process, there was a puff of purple smoke and Bronson the elf stood before her.
He spent the next hour sitting beside Kelley and discussing how her newfound power would define the Princess she would become and how, tempting as it might be, wishing ugliness and nastiness upon others was not the path she wanted to be going down. Eventually, with a pat on her hand, Bronson POOFED away in another puff of purple and Kelley skipped home. Before entering the house, she scooped a nice cold bucket of water from the well, then pulled a clean rag from the clothesline and walked quietly into Grismelda’s room where she wetted the rag and then set it gently across her step-mother’s forehead as she slept.
Ahhh… one can see that Kelley has grown so much since she began her Becoming. And it seems that the appearance of Bronson brought a bit of a blush to her cheeks and if I’m not mistaken, her heart skipped a beat or two. Methinks that Kelley has begun to fall under the spell of her future elf-husband!
